National Summit on Creative Youth Development Logo

The Summit – Policy Planks

The goal of the Summit is to gather as a community of practice to craft a concise, action-oriented policy agenda for the field, one for which we can all advocate and enact at the local, state, and national levels.

Based on research commissioned ahead of the Summit, the policy agenda will be organized around five key themes, or planks:

  1. Collective Impact for Youth: Connecting creative youth development with broader youth-serving sectors
Chair: Jon Hinojosa, SAY Si (San Antonio, TX)
Facilitator: G. Kwame Scruggs, Alchemy, Inc. (Akron, OH)
  2. Community Development: Integrating creative youth development with broader community development efforts
Chair: Vanessa Sanchez, National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago, IL)
Facilitator: Eric Booth, Everyday Arts, Inc. (High Falls, NY)
  3. Social Justice and Social Change: Engaging young people in shaping the world in which they want to live
Chair: Robyne Walker Murphy, DreamYard Project (Bronx, NY)
Facilitator: James Kaas, Youth Speaks (San Francisco, CA)
  4. Communicating Impact: More clearly defining creative youth development and more powerfully conveying its impact on young people and their communities
Chair: Cynthia Campoy Brophy, ArtworkxLA (Los Angeles, CA)
Facilitator:  Heather Ikemire, National Guild for Community Arts Education
  5. Funding and Sustainability: Enhancing funding, leadership, and field-building structures to increase the field’s capacity
Chair: Terry Liu, National Endowment for the Arts
Facilitator: Sara Stackhouse, Actors’ Shakespeare Project (Boston, MA)

At the Summit, participants will organize into five caucuses, each charged with refining the imperative and agenda for one of the above planks.
